GNS3 is powerful. EVE-NG takes it a step further. In this lecture, we install EVE-NG — the browser-based network emulation platform used by serious CCIE candidates, enterprise engineers, and security professionals who need to build large, complex, multi-vendor topologies that no simulator can handle.

This is the final tier of your lab toolkit. For CCNA, it's optional. For everything after CCNA, it's where the real engineers live.

EVE-NG:
Runs as a standalone server — you access it through a web browser
Accessible from any device on the network — laptop, tablet, anywhere
Scales to very large topologies with hundreds of nodes
Community Edition is free, Professional Edition is paid
Industry standard for CCIE bootcamps and enterprise network design

If GNS3 is a powerful workstation, EVE-NG is a private cloud for your labs. Different tools, different use cases — both valuable.

📊 COMMUNITY VS PROFESSIONAL EDITION

Community Edition (free):
Unlimited labs and nodes (hardware-limited)
Supports most common device types
Basic topology editor and console access
Enough for learning CCNA, CCNP, and many CCIE topics

Professional Edition (paid):
Multi-user support with role-based access
Advanced features like hot-linking, docker integration, link quality simulation
Better performance on large topologies
Commercial support and training integration
Essential for team environments and professional training centers

For personal study, Community Edition is more than enough. Do not pay for Professional until you know you need it.

💻 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Minimum for small labs:
8 GB of RAM allocated to the EVE-NG VM
4 CPU cores with virtualization support (VT-x or AMD-V)
40 GB of disk space
64-bit host system with virtualization enabled in BIOS/UEFI

Recommended for serious lab work:
16 to 32 GB of RAM on the host machine
8 or more CPU cores
SSD storage (highly recommended)
A dedicated hypervisor install for best performance

⚠️ EVE-NG is heavy. If your machine struggled with GNS3, it will struggle more with EVE-NG. Be realistic about your hardware before committing.

🏗️ INSTALLATION METHODS — THREE OPTIONS

Option 1 — EVE-NG as a virtual machine (recommended for most users)
Download the ready-built .ova file from the EVE-NG website
Import into VMware Workstation, ESXi, or VirtualBox
Start the VM and access EVE-NG through the browser
Easiest setup, isolated from your host OS

Option 2 — Bare-metal Ubuntu install
Install Ubuntu Server on dedicated hardware
Run the EVE-NG installer script
Full hardware resources available to the emulator
Best performance, but requires a dedicated machine

Option 3 — Cloud deployment
Run EVE-NG on a VPS or cloud instance with nested virtualization support
Access your lab from anywhere with internet
Ideal for distributed teams or when your local hardware is weak
Requires a provider that supports nested virtualization (not all do)
