Industrial Light & Magic Animation Supervisor Rick O'Connor talks about the importance of keeping your ego in check as an animator. In the field, animators work to bring someone else's vision to life (i.e. the director's) rather than their own.
Although animators may offer helpful suggestions for shots, everyone involved in the shot will have their own ideas and opinions. Because of this, one person, the director, is in charge of making the final decision on what the shot needs to provide. Having one person in charge of the big picture allows the scene to have a clear flow from one shot to the next.
