Terminal Native Coding Agent using TypeScript and AI SDK
In this video, I walk through a terminal-native AI coding agent I built from scratch using TypeScript and the Vercel AI SDK. It's a CLI tool that can read, write, and edit files, run shell commands, manage multi-step tasks, and delegate work to subagents — all driven by natural language, right from your terminal.
🔧 What it does:
Understands natural language requests and turns them into file operations, shell commands, and multi-step workflows
Reads, writes, and edits files directly on your filesystem
Executes bash commands on your behalf
Persists task state across sessions using a JSON-backed task tracker (read/write/edit tasks)
Delegates bounded, complex subtasks to a secondary subagent for cleaner reasoning
Manages long conversations via context-window/token tracking to avoid hitting LLM limits
Ships with a clean terminal UI — spinners, color-coded panels for input/tool calls/responses
⚙️ Tech stack:
TypeScript · Node.js · Vercel AI SDK · OpenAI API · Zod · npm
📦 Try it yourself — it's published on npm and installable with a single command:
npm install -g @rayyanalam047/terminal-cli-agent
