Destiny finally reaches our heroes...
"These bruises and burns hurt, but I can't really complain, it's the job I signed up for. Brains and dwarven corpses everywhere make me sick, but it was us or them. Some of my companions seem to have enjoyed this conflict a little too much, but I'm glad they're on my side. Now that asteroid Psyche 16 is clear, we should be able to start our mining operations. Hang on, just what is this structure? It looks like some kind of door or por- ah!
My heart races as a whole transport aircraft come out of a shining portal and marines pour out of it. After our last fight, there's no way we can take them on. I lay down my weapon, as do my comrades.
"You misunderstand us", their leader speaks in my own language. "We come from the future to prevent an alien invasion. It should begin any day now." He looks at us from head to toe. "Say, you look like you can hold your own in a fight. Won't you join us? The future where they succeed is a bleak one you do not want to live through."
Having been through my fair share of apocalyptic endings to society - nuclear fallout, drought, climate extremes, compounding concentration of power - I did not want to go through another one now that I finally caught a break. You may call it 'loss-aversion' if you will, I'd lay my life on the line to keep it. "Sir, I do not give a flying f*ck about the big shots who would be most penalized by this invasion. Having said that, ain't no way I'm letting them deny my payment for this mining gig. Those credits belong to me, and only after I've thoroughly enjoyed them would I allow some alien invasion to destroy humanity. Count us in!" The commander grinned and grabbed me by the shoulder. "Attaboy! We've got some aliens to put down!"
