In the early 1930s, Lin Siyun, returning to China with the dream of opening a maternity hospital, arrived in Shanghai only to be confronted with her father’s death, her brother’s debts, her fiancé’s betrayal, and pressure from a gangster lawyer, Cheng Ao, who came to collect on those debts. In the midst of these hardships, Lin Siyun persevered and successfully founded a high-quality obstetrics and gynecology hospital. But just as her dream took shape, the War of Resistance against Japan broke out. Confronted with the call of national survival, Lin Siyun and Cheng Ao became comrades of the Communist Party. Their relationship grew from misunderstanding to deep camaraderie, as they weathered bloody trials together, enduring the darkness before the dawn of a new society. In the early 1950s, the hospital was transformed into a garment factory. Yi Yi, Lin Siyun’s niece, longed to become a fashion designer, but as the widow of a Nationalist officer, she faced both social stigma and professional barriers. Fortuitously, she met Wen Pu, an outstanding Party cadre. Amidst the policy of public-private partnerships, Yi Yi found her new path in life and career, while she and Wen Pu quietly forged a restrained yet tender romance. By the early 1990s, the old European-style house had been converted into a well-known hotel in Shanghai. Ye Xining, Yi Yi’s granddaughter, was preparing there for her best friend’s wedding when she was unexpectedly drawn into a conspiracy. Dismissed from her government post and left with nothing, she ventured into private business. There, she met Xiang Beichuan, who had suffered setbacks of his own. Together, they embraced the tide of reform and opening-up, growing with the raw, untamed energy of the era.
