The Story of Color
This was an assignment for my film class on 5 different editing techniques. I had a lot of fun. If you have helpful feedback or want to leave a comment please do! I am always interested in learning more about editing as I go. Enjoy!
I wanted to tell a story through color. I transitioned through ROYGBIV blending sounds and visuals to create an “epic” peak into the colors and textures of this world. You’ll notice the warmer colors have a more upbeat sound and begin to slow as the colors become cooler. The end is meant to show all the colors and leave you feeling dreamy. I thought about adding text to walk people through the storyline. I may in the future do so. But I am very happy with how it came out.
Cuts:
Jump Cut – Done on the panning flower scene in the “red color”
Masked Cut - from Market walkers in the red scene to the fall “orange” colors of the arial tree line. This one wasn’t required but I really wanted to try it out. It was a pain in the butt, but I like the transition a lot.
Match Cut – From the Hot air balloon (moving right) to the greenery and ocean (also moving right) transitioning from yellow to green. Also added a flare transition to help blend.
Smash Cut – At the beginning with the black and white ocean uses the music drop to smash in the Red, Hot air balloon. Taking the scene from black and white into full color.
Cross Cut – The end with the woman dancing at dusk, cutting back and forth between the city scene and her dancing. Matching color as well.
L and J Cuts – Lots of these but most notably when the breathe takes us from the loud street festival of yellow to the quiet butterfly scene.
