There are soluble and insoluble copper-based preparations. Insoluble ones include Bordeaux mixture and azophos. Soluble copper preparations include copper sulfate, hom, oxyhom and other preparations. Copper sulfate has the strongest damaging effect on both pathogens and plants among all copper-containing preparations. Young leaves suffer especially from it, so copper sulfate is applied either to the green cone or to the adult leaf.
How to choose the right copper-containing preparation? Soluble copper salts are washed away by rain, so they are not very effective in open ground. For outdoor treatments, preference should be given to insoluble copper compounds, namely azophos or Bordeaux mixture. In protected soil, it is better to use soluble copper preparations, such as copper sulfate.
The concentration of copper sulfate for use should be no more than 1.2%. A concentration of 0.9% is already considered ineffective, and a 1.5% solution can cause serious damage to plants.
To reduce the toxicity of copper sulfate, you can use one trick. Dissolve 150 g of copper sulfate and 100 g of ordinary alkali in 3-4 liters of water, after which you will have a precipitate. Drain off as much of the supernatant as possible, then add 9% vinegar to the sediment until the sediment is completely dissolved. After that, bring the solution volume to 10 liters with water and add 200 ml of liquid soap. This solution has a much less damaging effect compared to copper sulfate.
Do not forget that young leaves are more sensitive to copper. Therefore, if you decide to treat actively growing plants, dilute the solution to 12 liters. After treatment, the plucked fruits must be thoroughly washed. This composition, unlike Bordeaux mixture, azophos and homa, is easily washed off.
