Figure 02 refines every element of the original Figure 01 design, showcasing significant advancements in both form and function. One of the key areas of improvement is the integration of cabling. In Figure 01, cabling was routed outside the chassis to support test harnesses, facilitate sensor and motor swaps, and expedite repairs. Figure 02, however, features all cabling tucked neatly within its limbs. This design evolution not only protects the cabling from environmental damage but also signifies a move from prototyping to production readiness, indicating that Figure AI is gearing up for industrial deployment.
Battery capacity is another area where Figure 02 shines. With a 2.25KWh battery, its runtime has increased by 50% compared to Figure 01, which had a 5-hour runtime. This means Figure 02 can operate for approximately 7.5 hours, making it more suitable for prolonged tasks in real-world environments. The battery is integrated into the torso, bringing the center of mass closer to the centerline, enhancing the robot's nimbleness and stability.
The custom motors in Figure 02 are optimized for power and performance, seamlessly integrated with the drive trains of the robot’s joints. The clean design of the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees, the four main joint groups, highlights the meticulous engineering behind this model. The internal routing of cables through rotary joints addresses a common challenge in robotics, resulting in a robust and efficient design.
Figure AI has also made significant strides in hand functionality. The hands of Figure 02 boast 16 degrees of freedom (DoF) and can carry up to 25 kg (55.1 lb.), compared to Figure 01's 20 kg (44 lbs.) capacity. The hands are designed to mimic human functionality, with four fingers and an opposable thumb, allowing them to manipulate a wide range of objects. Each finger is actuated by an integrated unit containing sensors and a motor, while the wrist provides a human-like range of motion, with all power and sensor-signal wiring neatly encased.
In terms of computational power and AI capabilities, Figure 02 is a significant leap forward. It has three times the computation and AI inference capabilities onboard compared to Figure 01, enabling it to perform tasks autonomously in real-world settings. Equipped with six RGB cameras, Figure 02 can perceive its environment, and its onboard vision language model enables rapid common-sense visual reasoning. This advanced perception system is crucial for obstacle avoidance and hand-eye coordination, allowing the robot to identify and interact with objects seamlessly.
The partnership between Figure AI and OpenAI has been instrumental in advancing Figure 02's speech-to-speech capabilities. This collaboration has enabled Figure AI to quickly test, validate, and iterate on these capabilities, resulting in a robot that can converse with humans through onboard microphones and speakers connected to custom AI models. This capability was demonstrated in several impressive videos released by Figure AI, showcasing the robot's ability to interact with humans via voice commands.
