Firebird Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona brought the HEAT… and we mean serious heat. 🔥
This video kicks off with a quick look at the burnout before we dive straight into qualifying day. I walk you through what it’s like dealing with these brutal desert conditions, give you a tour up top in the race trailer, and answer a question we get all the time — why in the world we run mud grips on a Top Fuel dragster.
From there, it’s time to fire the car for the first warmup… and things start getting interesting.
After the warmup, I look up and realize we’re surrounded by the PFI Speed family and Dune Addicts crew — such a cool and unexpected moment at the track!
Heading into Q1, we’re also testing something new — a NASCAR-style cool shirt system to try and battle the extreme cockpit temps. You’ll even get a behind-the-scenes look at me climbing into the car thanks to Brent grabbing some great footage.
Unfortunately, the first run didn’t go our way with an immediate dropped cylinder.
Q2 looked much more promising early on… but with track temperatures soaring over 140 degrees, it quickly turned into tire smoke just a couple hundred feet into the run.
We break it all down, talk more about the cool shirt setup, and discuss just how unusual it is to be DONE racing this early in the day — but with the NHRA moving the schedule because of the heat, it made for a different kind of qualifying day.
Now it’s time to regroup and get ready for Q3 tomorrow.
