Today I got out there and fertilized all of the bur oak trees I have planted over the last five years. The ones that got a balanced fertilizer last year are getting nitrogen-only this year (and likely until I quit fertilizing them). The ones that got a balanced fertilizer on the ground last year got 20-10-10 (with sulfur) shoveled-in, and the ones that have never been fertilized are getting 20-10-10 sprinkled on the ground around them. They will all be fertilized again in late fall after leaf production has ceased, which will give them a boost through the winter. The larger trees are just under 12' tall as of last fall, and I expect them to grow two to three feet again this year. I will stop fertilizing altogether at 5 to 6 years, and may resume with a light fertilization at 10 years or-so.
