What is SKILL.md? It is not code, and you do not need to be a programmer to write one. In this video I open the actual file and show you, line by line, what a SKILL.md really is, in plain English.
Most people go to look one up, find a hundred and eighty lines that look exactly like computer code, and close the tab. So they never find out the truth: the real file is almost nothing. It is a plain text document with two parts. A few lines at the top that say what it does and when to use it, and below that, your instructions written in plain English. Twenty lines, maybe. You could fit it on an index card.
This matters right now because Claude Code Skills are the simplest way to get AI doing your real work, and almost no one outside of developers knows how to write one. You are not building the smarts. Claude already has those. You are just handing it a note, the same way you would brief a brand new assistant on their first day. As Anthropic, the company that makes Claude, puts it: "Create a SKILL.md file with instructions, and Claude adds it to its toolkit." That is the whole idea.
I walk through a real one on screen: a folder called weekly-update, one SKILL.md inside it, a single description line at the top, then four plain steps. Then I type a forward slash and the name into Claude Code, the free program you put on your computer, and the weekly update writes itself. No code anywhere. By the end you will know exactly what a SKILL.md file is, how to write one step by step, and how to build your first this Saturday.
This is for anyone curious or confused about AI. No coding background. No jargon. If you can write a to-do list, you can write one of these.
