Timelapse video of hours of shading practice, working on contrasts between values and the transitions from dark to light. It seems the only way to get an intuitive feel for what pencils will produce the light value you are after is to practice reproducing example shades over and over. The practice shown in this video took at least eight hours all together to complete.
