John Peter Petrucci (New York, July 12, 1967) is an American guitarist, one of the founders of the progressive metal band Dream Theater along with former drummer Mike Portnoy and bassist John Myung.

John Peter Petrucci first played guitar at age eight when he realized his sister, who played the organ at the time, could stay up later to practice. However, his plan to stay up past bedtime didn't last long and he gave up the instrument. At age 12 he started playing again when he was invited to join the band of his friend Kevin Moore, who would later become Dream Theater's first keyboardist. John began practicing intensely. He was largely self-taught, developing his skills by trying to imitate his idols, who include Steve Morse, Steve Howe, Steve Vai, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Al Di Meola, Alex Lifeson, Allan Holdsworth, David Gilmour, and Dave Murray. John often jokes that his idols are "the Steves and the Als."

John Petrucci took exams and entered Berklee College of Music in Boston with his childhood friend John Myung, a bassist. There they would meet Mike Portnoy, with whom they would form the band Majesty, which would later become Dream Theater.

Although Dream Theater is the band with which Petrucci is most frequently associated, he is also part of the Liquid Tension Experiment project and has appeared as a guest on several recordings by other artists, such as on Explorer Club's album Age of Impact.

John created a guitar video lesson, "Rock Discipline," where he presents warm-up exercises, exercises to avoid injuries while playing, alternate picking, sweep picking, chords, and other techniques for developing guitar skills. He also has a book titled "Guitar World Presents John Petrucci's Wild Stringdom," which is a compilation of speakers he wrote for the magazine of the same name.

In 2001, he was invited by Joe Satriani and Steve Vai to tour with the popular G3, which exposed him to a large number of new fans and inspired him to record a solo album. Suspended Animation was released on March 1, 2005, and was sold through his website. John Petrucci also participated in G3's tours in 2005, 2006, and 2007.

John also wrote and recorded two instrumental tracks for a Sega Saturn game titled Digital Pinball: Necronomicon. Each track is approximately 2 minutes long and is simply titled "Prologue" and "Epilogue." John is an avid Sega Saturn player, and has revealed in interviews that he never goes on tour without it.

Dream Theater bandmate Jordan Rudess has stated that Petrucci is a practicing Catholic.[1] John is married to Rena Sands, guitarist of the all-female heavy metal band Meanstreak, and they have 3 children: SamiJo and Reny (twins) and Kiara. He is also an avid bodybuilding fan and dedicates much of his time to weight training.[2]
