Many people think that divers flip sharks belly-up just to prevent them from biting. But the real reason is deeper. Researchers do this to temporarily induce a state of tonic immobility in the shark and reduce the risk of injury during observation. In this position, the shark briefly loses orientation and freezes almost motionless. This isn't magic, but a special reaction of the nervous system to a change in body position.
