Know It Now: How Climate Change Heats Up Conflict in the Arctic
Snow dragons and a Polar Silk Road . . . while these may sound like they could come out of Game of Thrones, they’re actually icebreaking ships and a new Arctic cargo route being developed by China. As ice melts due to climate change, the Arctic region is opening up to new shipping routes and making deeply frozen resources more accessible. Other countries are also competing to gain a strategic presence over this new and potentially valuable frontier, with the United States, Canada, and six European countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, and Sweden) controlling land in the Arctic Circle.
