Horizon and Perspective: Curatorial Gaze to Gauge Promise of Art
September 4-5, 2023, Bikaner House, New Delhi
Curatorial Proposition for Performance Art
Moderator: Ranjana Dave
Speakers: Nikhil Chopra, Daniel Blanga-Gubbay, Jyothidas K V, Vali Mahlouji
The presence of the curator in performance art is still at its nascent stage of reception as opposed to its role in the field of visual arts. While curators have long played a central role in shaping exhibitions of static visual art, the world of performance art presents unique challenges and opportunities that are continually evolving. Performance art, unlike its static counterpart, is inherently transient, elusive, and immersive. It defies traditional boundaries, existing at the intersection of time, space, and the human experience. Here, the role of the curator becomes a delicate balance of preserving the authenticity of the live moment while curating a meaningful and resonant experience for both the performer and the audience.
The speakers drew a thread of engagement, bridging the bodily and sensorial experiences of both the performer and the viewer. This panel discussion invited the listeners to dive deeper into the world of performance art curation, exploring the challenges, innovations, and opportunities that arise when curators engage with this dynamic and ever-evolving medium. As the lines between curator and artist blur, we gained a richer understanding of how performance art can provoke, challenge, and inspire.
