Photoshop live shapes into custom shapes (Photoshop CC)
Use the Photoshop layer shape set operations to create interesting shape designs (intersect, subtract etc) but if you wish to save that design as a custom shape, the custom shape menu define command is often not enabled (this varies). If you merge all the shape components, the live shape is saved as a regular path but again the custom shape menu might not be accessible. The shape can be saved as a custom shape via the direct selection tool in the Photoshop toolbox
