There was actually a late minute cast change. While filming the pilot episode, Jill Taylor was originally played by Frances Fisher, but the test audience thought that she was too whiney. Four days before the pilot episode, Patricia Richardson replaced her as Jill, but Patricia had just given birth to her twins. She actually brought them to her interview, and the producers had a nursery built in the studio for them. Also, earlier in the seasons, Tim Allen would actually mess up some of his lines so that some of the younger cast members wouldn’t feel so bad about messing up their own lines. He also had to stop doing his signature grunting in later seasons since it took such a toll on his voice.
