A breakdown of my most recent personal project, "Gaia". A CGI 3D environment built in Houdini Solaris and rendered with Karma XPU. Some modelling and animation in Blender, background mountains in Gaea, comped in Nuke. I worked on it in my free time over 6 months, if this project was a job I'd quote ~3 weeks.
Due to VRAM limitations and for more control in comp, I split the render into 7 layers. Combined render time across all layers was ~12 minutes / frame on 1 RTX 4090, totalling ~60 hours.
My biggest inspiration was, of course, THE LINE's beautiful animation 'Dear Alice', a staple of the solarpunk genre.

Gaia ("Γαῖα") is the ancient Greek primordial goddess of Earth, the mother of all life. She represents the poetic, foundational power and beauty of the natural world. The Gaia Hypothesis observes Earth as a self-regulating system where organisms and their abiotic environments co-evolve, interacting to maintain the conditions necessary for life. This synthesis of ancient reverence and geophysiology points to a future where humanity, guided by technology and a deep respect for the planet, thrives in harmony with a beautiful, living Earth.
