A classic Slovak electric locomotive seen from a spectacular bird’s-eye perspective. On 4 July 2026, RailwayRetro captured ZSSK Class 163 locomotive 163.107 hauling a regional passenger train through Spišské Tomášovce in eastern Slovakia.
What makes this train particularly attractive is the locomotive’s traditional green-and-yellow livery. While many Slovak locomotives have gradually received newer corporate colour schemes, 163.107 still carried the classic appearance strongly associated with Slovak and former Czechoslovak electric railways. Seen from above, the locomotive, passenger coaches, railway line and surrounding countryside form a complete view of everyday regional railway operation beneath the High Tatras.
The Class 163 locomotives are commonly known among railway enthusiasts as “Peršing”. Developed in Czechoslovakia by Škoda, these four-axle electric locomotives became an important part of passenger railway transport in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia. They were designed for operation under the 3 kV DC electrification system and have spent decades hauling regional trains, express services and other passenger workings.
The distinctive angular body, large front windscreens and unmistakable Škoda design make the Peršing one of the most recognisable electric locomotives of its generation. Although newer electric multiple units and modern locomotives are gradually taking over many services, traditional locomotive-hauled passenger trains remain an important and visually appealing part of Slovak railway traffic.
Locomotive 163.107 was captured here leading an ordinary passenger train, yet the elevated camera position transforms the everyday service into a striking railway scene. The bird’s-eye view reveals the complete train formation, the geometry of the track and the relationship between the railway and the landscape around Spišské Tomášovce.
Aerial railway footage provides a perspective that cannot be experienced from a platform or lineside location. Instead of seeing only the front or side of the train, viewers can observe the locomotive and coaches as one moving unit. The traditional green-and-yellow locomotive stands out clearly against the surrounding vegetation, railway ballast and rural scenery.
Spišské Tomášovce lies in the Spiš region of Slovakia, an area known for its dramatic landscape, historic towns and proximity to Slovak Paradise. The railway through this region carries a varied mixture of regional passenger trains, long-distance services and freight traffic. Its combination of electrified main-line infrastructure and mountainous scenery makes it an excellent location for railway photography and video recording.
The passenger train shown in this video represents the kind of reliable regional service that has formed the backbone of everyday rail transport in Slovakia for generations. Trains hauled by Class 163 locomotives connected towns, villages and junction stations long before modern electric units became widespread. For many passengers and railway workers, the sound and appearance of a Peršing remain closely connected with daily travel.
The classic green-and-yellow colour scheme is especially significant for enthusiasts of Slovak and Czechoslovak railways. It recalls an era when locomotives and passenger coaches carried highly recognisable national liveries rather than the more standardised branding used by many modern operators. Every surviving locomotive in this appearance helps preserve the visual identity of Central European railway history.
This short video is intended as a long-term visual record of locomotive 163.107 in regular passenger operation during the summer of 2026. Railway fleets, paint schemes and train formations change continuously, and locomotives that appear ordinary today may become historically valuable subjects in the future.
The recording will appeal to viewers interested in Slovak trains, ZSSK locomotives, Class 163 Peršing, Škoda electric locomotives, green-and-yellow railway liveries, locomotive-hauled passenger trains, aerial train footage, drone railway videos, Spiš railways and Central European railway history.
Filmed from a bird’s-eye perspective at Spišské Tomášovce, Slovakia, on 4 July 2026.
