Hello everyone!
This is a continuation of the workshop construction and installation.
At this stage, we are installing the foundation for the future floor.
To do this, we first treat all the lower parts of the load-bearing frame, as well as the framing, with used oil.
Treating wood with used oil is one of the most common methods of coating and protecting wood from moisture, rodents, insects, and mold.
Next, beams cut to size (150 x 100 mm in cross-section) are laid on top of the lower framing.
For spans of 4 to 5 meters, 200 x 150 mm beams should be used.
In our case, we are adding additional supports in the middle to the remaining old foundation.
Next, we screw boards (called cranial beams) to the bottom of the joists; these will serve as the base for the sub-flooring under the insulation. After nailing all the joints, we generously treat the beams with the same used oil.
We nail the clapboards (left over from the demolition of the old building) onto the pre-screwed slabs at a small interval. We didn't need to treat them, as they were already impregnated with paint or drying oil.
This structure is designed solely to support the insulation.
Once the base for insulation is ready, we lay a moisture-proof windproof membrane over it, overlapping it by at least 100 mm.
This membrane effectively wicks away vapor, protecting the insulation from moisture.
Next, we lay the mineral wool insulation.
We install the boards in two layers, the first 100 mm thick, the second 50 mm.
In such cases, it is recommended to lay the second layer of mineral wool so that the joint between the boards of the first layer falls in the middle of the boards of the second layer, i.e., in a staggered pattern. We lay a vapor barrier membrane on top and secure it with a construction stapler.
The vapor barrier prevents condensation on the insulation, protects the wooden joists from mold, and thus extends the life of the structure.
Next, we install the sheathing using 100x25mm boards; this is necessary for ventilation and air circulation.
We hammer two 70mm nails into each 400mm spaced.
Why is the focus on the number and size of nails? They look like regular nails?
No, friends, you don't need to hammer nails into frame construction.
There are so-called nail spacing standards, and they must be followed.
Next, we lay the subfloor using 150x50mm boards with a 10mm spaced space. This is necessary to prevent creaking of the future floors and to provide additional ventilation.
We hammer three 120mm nails into each joist. The base for the future floor is ready; leveling and finishing will be done when the workshop is finished.
