Simplex & Stop and Wait Protocols- Flow Control Protocols for Noiseless Channel- A Role Play

Flow control refers to a set of procedures used to restrict the amount of data that the sender can send before waiting for acknowledgment.
 Ensuring the sending entity does not overwhelm the receiving entity
 Preventing buffer overflow
Protocols for Noiseless Channel:
1. UTOPIA Simplex protocol
2. Stop-and-Wait Protocol

Simplex protocol
• Sender has continuous data
• Data transmitted in one direction only
• Transmitting and receiving layers are always ready
• Infinite buffer space at receiver
• Processing time is ignored
• Ideal communication channel - no loss, no errors

Simplex Stop-and-Wait Protocol
• Consider a slow receiver
• no buffer space at receiver
• Sender sends one frame and stops, waits for acknowledgement
• channel is still error free and traffic is simplex
