Mirena IUD News: Mirena Lawsuits Consolidated into Multidistrict Litigation

On April 8th a federal judicial panel ordered all federal Mirena IUD lawsuits to be consolidated in a district court in New York to speed up pretrial proceedings.
The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation made the order because the plaintiffs in the federal lawsuits all are suing based on similar side effects of the Mirena hormonal IUD, such as device migration, uterine perforation, and the likelihood of the device to become embedded in the uterine wall.
Rochelle Rottenstein, principal of the Rottenstein Law Group, said this does not mean the lawsuits will be a "class action." Rather, it means greater efficiency for pretrial procedures such as the gathering of evidence. Each plaintiff still has the potential for his or her case to go to trial and to receive his or her own damages award, she said.
