Seelow Heights today
The battle of Seelow Heights marked the beginning of the battle for Berlin in 1945. Seelow controlled a route to Berlin from the Oder bridgeheads captured by the Red Army from 31 January 1945 mainly without opposition. The ensuing ten weeks gave the Germans time to reinforce and form a defence line along the Seelow Heights, a ridge up to 50 metres high above the swampy land of the Oder flood plain below.
