In many situations you don’t need to know how many words your whole document has, but only a specific fragment of the text.

In those cases, Google Docs lets you count the words of a single paragraph, a section, or even just one short sentence.

To do it, follow these steps.

Select with your mouse (or your keyboard) the text whose word count you want to check.

Once the text is selected, open the Tools menu.

Inside that menu, click again on Word count.

In the pop-up window you’ll see two different counts: one for the entire document and one for the selected text.

If you prefer to use the keyboard shortcut, it also works with selected text and shows you the same information separately.

This feature is perfect when you work on tasks that require a specific length for each section, such as introductions, summaries, or conclusions.
