Sumidero Canyon is a national treasure for Mexico and the state of Chiapas. In fact it is so iconic that it is part of the Chiapas coat of arms. It is said that before being conquered by the Spaniards the Chiapanecos (original people who lived in Chiapas) threw themselves off the canyon walls rather than be captured.
Today Sumidero is the second most popular tourist attraction in all of Chiapas and it receives around 300 thousand visitors each year. It is a haven to endangered wildlife and a valuable ecological resource.
