Licorice Pizza is set in 1973 and tells the story of the treacherous journey of first love between Alana and Gary as they grow up, run wild, and fall in love in the San Fernando Valley. In this visual tale, accompanied by unforgettable songs by David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Nina Simone, and The Doors, Anderson has chosen a stellar cast: alongside the very young and charismatic newcomers Alana Haim (guitarist of the band Haim) and Cooper Hoffman (son of Philip Seymour Hoffman), in memorable cameo roles, are two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn (Mystic River, Milk), director and actor Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born, American Sniper, American Hustle, Silver Linings Playbook), Tom Waits, and Benny Safdie.
Critically acclaimed, Licorice Pizza is "Anderson's most delicate and captivating film" according to Screen International; while Rolling Stone calls it "there are two courtships in the film, and only one of them happens on screen. The other is between us and the film."
