Nipple Shields are commonly used for breastfeeding challenges. We have come a long way in the construction of nipple shields. Historically, nipple shields were made out of products that would not allow breast and nipple stimulation, which then lead to failure to thrive (FTT), loss of milk production and eventual weaning to formula. Now nipples shields are made out of a thin silicone that allows for proper milk removal, proper breast and nipple stimulation, adequate milk stimulation, and a baby who can thrive on mother's milk.
I will show you the type of nipple shield that is safe to use. A few types of brands that we, Lactation Consultants, recommend and trust.
Then I will show you the style that is unsafe. This is a WARNING about a product currently on the market that has a design that throws us back hundreds of years. Please be cautious and do not use this product as a nipple shield. This type of nipple shield causes the very problems we are trying to avoid in lactation. It is a dinosaur and should be removed from the market.
