Thrice is one of my longtime favorite bands and biggest inspirations for my own musical style - not just because their music is great, but also because of the variety of their decades-spanning catalog. Over their 25+ years as a band they've done everything from soft electronica to screaming headbangers. This one is probably their best-known song of the latter category. (So much so, in fact, that "Play Deadbolt" has become a meme at their live shows.)

I've played along to this song since I first started learning drums; it remains one of my favorite drum songs to this day. The trickiest part was the fact that there are very subtle tempo changes throughout the song; when I tried playing the whole song at the base tempo it just didn't feel right. So rather than take too much time and transpose them manually, I just did what no drummer should EVER do and played along to the original song with no click track. Aside from a couple of parts where I dragged a bit, it worked out okay. When they play the song live they add a neat little outtro at the end; I worked that in from memory as well (I did just see them a couple months ago so it was pretty fresh.)

As always, every part was recorded in a single continuous take with all mistakes left intact, and there is no pitch correction on the vocals, nor any processing other than EQ and compression.

Enjoy! 😎
