Need to set up FortiClient VPN on Windows to connect to your work or school network? Here's how to install it and configure the connection, step by step.
▶ Step 1 — Download & install:
1. Get FortiClient from the official Fortinet site: https://www.fortinet.com/support/prod...
2. Choose "FortiClient VPN" (the free VPN-only version) for Windows
3. Run the installer and follow the prompts, then restart if asked
▶ Step 2 — Configure the VPN connection:
1. Open FortiClient → go to "Remote Access"
2. Click "Configure VPN"
3. Choose the VPN type: SSL-VPN or IPsec VPN (your IT team will tell you which)
4. Connection Name: anything you like (e.g., "Work VPN")
5. Remote Gateway: enter the server address your IT provided (e.g., vpn.yourcompany.com)
6. Port: usually 443 for SSL-VPN (use what IT specifies)
7. Save
▶ Step 3 — Connect:
1. Select your connection, enter your username and password
2. Approve any MFA prompt (Duo, token, etc.) if your organisation uses it
3. Connected — you now have secure access to your network
⚠️ YOU'LL NEED FROM YOUR IT TEAM:
The remote gateway / server address
VPN type (SSL or IPsec) and port
Your username, password, and any MFA method
These are unique to each organisation — IT provides them. Never enter VPN details or credentials that someone asks for via email, chat, or a website you don't recognise (a common scam).
