Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde, known simply as Oscar Wilde (Dublin, October 16, 1854 – Paris, November 30, 1900), was an Irish writer, aphorist, poet, playwright, journalist, essayist, and literary critic of the Victorian era, an exponent of British Decadentism and Aestheticism.
A seemingly simple and spontaneous, yet essentially refined, author whose writing was prone to the pursuit of the bon mot (the witticisms), his sometimes scathing and impertinent style sought to awaken his readers' attention and invite them to reflection. He is best known for his frequent use of aphorisms and paradoxes, for which he is still often cited.
