This was Bumpy's first night with us. After his mother died, he spent at least a day huddled by her body before he was found by the Kenya Wildlife Service. By the time he arrived at our Nairobi Nursery, he was clearly just relieved to be rescued. Keeper Simon put his mattress on the ground so the tiny hippo could nestle by his side, where he spent the night sleeping soundly in the crook of his arm. He has been glued to his Keepers from that moment on.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) is a global leader in elephant conservation. Its pioneering Orphans’ Project — the world’s first and most successful program of its kind to rescue, rehabilitate, and reintegrate orphaned African elephants, rhinos, and other creatures into the wild — has earned international acclaim. SWT’s broader conservation mission encompasses extensive aerial, field, and community support initiatives that protect wildlife and preserve vital habitats across Kenya.
