In this talk, I share the story behind my book Trapped in Infinity: We Were Looking for a Door—But Found a Ladder Instead. What began as a memoir evolved into an exploration of addiction, trauma, Internal Family Systems (IFS), psychology, philosophy, Buddhism, and the strange ways we become imprisoned by our own attempts to survive.
For years I believed my addictions were trying to destroy me.
Then I realized something shocking:
They were trying to save me.
The problem wasn't that they existed. The problem was that they worked—until they didn't.
This presentation weaves together stories from jail, recovery, skateboarding, punk rock, meditation, therapy, and art to ask a deeper question: What if the parts of us we hate are actually trying to protect us?
