There was no denying the Pembroke Pines Charter boys basketball team this time. Led by Kolby King’s 27 points, the Jaguars defeated Choctawhatchee 83-68 for the Class 5A state championship at the RP Funding Center on Saturday in Lakeland. Pines Charter became the 13th team that is currently a Broward county Athletic Association school to win a boys’ state hoops title.
“We made history with the first state title for our seniors and coaches,” said King, who is one of four starters returning next season. “This was a big step up after last year.”
It was the first boys' state basketball championship in school history. The Jaguars fell short of a state title last year following a 67-60 loss to Tallahassee Rickards.
“This feels great for all the guys that have graduated from here,” said Pines Charter coach Dave Roca. “We went to man-to-man in the fourth quarter from a 2-3 zone and that was the difference. Holy cow I can’t believe this.”
Roca missed much of the season from courtside making sure his family stayed safe from COVID, especially his Mother-in-Law. He returned to the state tournament in time to earn a championship.
Not only did the defense create separation in the fourth quarter, but the Jaguars were also steady from the free-throw line (13-of-16) to preserve the advantage. After trailing briefly at 4-2, Pines Charter ended the first quarter by outscoring Choctawhatchee 21-5. The Jaguars never trailed again at any point through the remaining three quarters, the lead did shrink to 43-40 midway through the third quarter.
Geoffrey Sprouse added 14 points and Elijah Wyche 13 points for the Jaguars. Many of their points came in the crucial fourth quarter to preserve the Jaguars' lead.
“We have balance among our four juniors with each of us capable of scoring. We have worked hard from beginning to the end,” said King.
“This is gratifying and an accomplishment to get one under your belt after we lost last year, said Roca. Last year after the loss I had a meltdown. The game is to keeping winning. I know where we are, and we are in it to win it.”
Statistically, the Jaguars' victory was also keyed by scoring in the paint for the second straight (48-34) and points off turnovers (27-12). Both helped to the double-digit victory.
Pines Charter ended the game with a 12-5 to seal the victory.
