Could Cargill's mine under Cayuga Lake collapse or flood?
Environmental Reporter Peter Mantius has been covering the Finger Lakes region for years. He's seen the ups-and-downs of environmental issues ranging from a proposed incinerator in Romulus, to landfilling at two major operations located in Seneca and Ontario counties, as well as the rise of bitcoin mining at Greenidge Generation along Seneca Lake.
The Cayuga Salt Mine, operated by a company called Cargill, was recently cited by his reporting for being allowed to menuever around state environmental law. The DEC has effectively given Cargill a pass to operate despite some major concerns about safety of its salt mine operation under Cayuga Lake. The company employs more than 200 people and Cargill is one of the largest companies on the planet.
On Wednesday, we caught up with Mantius to talk about his reporting, the risks experts say are not far-fetched, and what that could mean for residents surrounding Cayuga Lake.
