This was the first experiment to confirm Einstein's general theory of relativity. The experiment was conducted by two groups. The first group, led by Charles Davidson and Andrew Crommelin, went to Brazil. They brought two telescopes.
The second group, led by Arthur Eddington and supported by Edwin Cottingham, went to West Africa. They brought one telescope. What did they see? The changing positions of stars due to the Sun's gravity.
General relativity predicts that spacetime will change due to the presence of strong gravity. Therefore, starlight around the Sun will be bent when it reaches Earth. But it's difficult to see these changes during the day; the sunlight is too bright.
So they had to do it during a total solar eclipse. They then photographed the positions of the stars during the night and during the total solar eclipse and compared the two. The results showed that the positions of the stars changed, and the changes were in line with the predictions of the theory of general relativity.
This phenomenon is called gravitational lensing.
