"As an old masochist, one wants to lock oneself up for months and endure these tortures." In front of his farm in Upper Austria, Thomas Bernhard speaks about his childhood and youth, "The Magic Flute," Trakl, writing, solitude, the theater, "The Hunting Party," and "the German language." I have shortened the film by removing the many musical interludes (mostly impressions of Salzburg) ("The Fire and the Water Trial," Norbert Beilharz, 1978).
