Conscripts aren't born, they're made. Two comrades who'd lost touch in civilian life unexpectedly meet at the military recruiting office. A city brat and a country bumpkin will now share the burden of military service. As usual, fulfilling one's civic duty is fraught with a host of troubles.
The main scourge is the "real colonel." This is the textbook commander. Such commanders don't cross the Alps, but they're guaranteed to become the subject of jokes. Recruits are subject to the usual stories inherent in military life: from "grandfathers" to going AWOL. Sometimes, unregulated romantic relationships break into Russian troop positions. A nurse, a major, and a private—Shakespeare would envy such a love triangle.
