One of the greatest songs of all time, the story behind Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit is just as epic. Considered by Cobain to be a cliched rip off of Boston’s 1976 hit More than a feeling infused with the Pixies’ style of loud-quiet-loud playing, the four-chorded “anthem for apathetic kids” was the perfect bridge between hard rock and post punk. The crazy thing about this genre defining single though is that it wouldn’t have existed without a deodorant. The story goes that singer of feminist punk band Bikini Kill, Kathleen Hanna, spent the day drinking with close friend Kurt Cobain in the early 90s. Next morning, the frontman woke to find his home smashed up with the words “Kurt Smells like teen spirit” written on his walls and that’s how deodorant made Nirvana famous.
