Did We Reach Peak Controller Design?
The importance of controllers if often not acknowledge despite controllers being a key for the enjoyment of our games. Controllers, as the name suggests, let players control what is happening within the digital world; that is quite an important task! In the first 25 years of gaming, we observed an evolution in the design, with more keys, thumbsticks, features, and more being added or removed with time. Yet in the more recent 25 years we observe little to no evolution. Can you truly distinguish the core design of an Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X controller? Can you spot the core differences between a Dualshock 3, Dualshock 4, and Dualshock 5? Switch 1 Pro Controller and Switch 2 Pro Controller? The core design of controllers has remained the same for over two decades, sparking in me the question "Have we reached peak design?". I hope you enjoy the video! :)
