If War Thunder's F-104 Starfighter was historically accurate
Inspired by the experiences of F-86 Sabre pilots in the Korean War, the F-104 Starfighter was envisioned and designed as an air superiority fighter. Intended to use overwhelming performance to its advantage, the F-104 was often aptly described as a "manned missile." The Starfighter had a number of design and reliability issues that led to the US grounding it for a while, with many F-104 orders being cancelled. In US service the F-104 only saw limited use in Vietnam, but saw widespread use with European nations. In Germany especially, the F-104 gained a reputation for being notoriously dangerous and hard to fly.
