Modals are words that are used to express request, ability, possibility, permission, intention, determination and necessity. They are also called modal auxiliary verbs.

Can and Could
Can is used to express ability in the present and to ask for permission.

Shall and Should
Shall is also used for making an offer, a suggestion and a promise.

Will and Would
Will is used to express determination and willingness.

May and Might
May is used to express permission and a strong possibility. Might suggests a weak possibility.
