With the release of the 2024 Player's Handbook just around the corner, how have things changed for our weapon using characters? Using information revealed so far, I compare 5 martial archetypes (dual wielding, sword and board, 2H melee, hand crossbows, and 2H ranged) between their 2024 and 2014 versions. Note: As a smaller content creator, I didn't get early access to the PHB.
Analysis was done from levels 1-8 for average DPR, against a target AC of 12+PB, for a 4 round combat. Assumed saving throw bonus for enemies was our PB. Our character was a generic subclass-less fighter, and I assumed we had a use of action surge available from level 2 and beyond.
By no means does this analysis declare what's best; rather what has the strongest foundation for us to build on.
