Rob kinda stumbles his way through this one, as it's VERY DIFFERENT than most 4X games, which might make it VERY INTERESTING to you. Sword of the Stars 1 is held in such reverence that very few people dare try to emulate it, but along comes Stellar Sovereigns with its attempt at taking some of the mechanics of SotS 1, adding its own twist, and adding some (insurmountable?) depth. Definitely worth a look:
