How To Create An Effective Blog Strategy In 5 Steps
1. Research
First, you need to get in the head of your potential customer.
List all the problems and questions they ask or search online before buying from you.
Think about the problems they face and the questions they ask before they know about your brand.
For example: If you were a double glazing company
Problem - "Our busy street keeps me up at night"
Question - "How to soundproof windows?"
Problem - "My house is cold in the winter"
Question - "How to insulate windows?"
2. List topics
Identify and list the topics that these problems and questions fall into.
For example:
Topic: Soundproof Windows
Topic: Window Insulation
3. Keyword research
Perform keyword research on each topic to establish which topics hold the most potential to attract traffic to your blog.
Blog Campaign #1: Soundproof Windows
Blog Campaign #2: Window Insulation
Here are a few quick tips to help you establish which topic and keywords hold the most potential by looking at metrics such as:
𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐬
How many times a keyword is searched every month on average.
𝐂𝐏𝐂 (𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐤)
You want to take notice of cost per clicks as this means that other brands are happy to pay to target this particular keyword which signals that it is a keyword that converts.
The higher the CPC, the more potential it holds.
𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐲
The estimated difficulty to rank for the keyword in Google.
The higher the number, the more difficult it will be to get your blog post to the first page of Google's search engine results.
It is always good to target a mixture of low and high difficulty keywords.
𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐏 (𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐞)
Search the keyword in Google and check what kind of results show?
You want the results to be articles.
This shows that it is worthwhile targeting the keyword with a blog post. If the results favour video, then a blog post isn't the right approach for this keyword.
4. Choose your topic and keywords
Select the most promising topic to start with and build a list of keywords to target.
You can use a keyword tool like Ubersuggest.
Be sure to take the tips mentioned above into account.
5. Map out your blog campaign
Map out a series of blog posts that target the keywords you've selected for your first blogging campaign.
For example:
Campaign #1: Soundproofing Windows
Blog #1 - how to soundproof a window DIY
Blog #2 - laminated glass soundproofing
Blog #3 - how much do soundproof windows cost
Blog #4 - secondary glazing for noise
Blog #5 - "your next focus keyword"
Blog #6 - "your next focus keyword"
Etc...
Taking the time to create a well-researched blog strategy is vital to generate relevant organic traffic to your website.
Without one...
Creating blog content becomes expensive, time-consuming and non-profitable.
