The sober movement has been growing, with popular and trendy dry-bars and pop-up parties happening across North America. I think it's safe to say that this new generation of mindful millennials and gen-z's are re-thinking what culture, politics and media have been trying to tell us is normal. I have always felt that those who say that substances make them MORE of who they actually are were misguided, and the idea that one can only socialize while under the influence of a substace is just...sad :(
I was so elated when David and I got the opportunity to work with Audra, the founder of soBAR Seattle, on their debut sober pop-up party! We love that she envisions a nightlife environment without the icky-ness of what substances can bring out of you, but more importantly, to create a fun and safe environment where adults can genuinely socialize as themselves...awkward and all!
I believe that this is SUCH an important movement and conversation in learning to go through the uncomfortable baggage we all carry and the crutches we employ to just "get through" life. True self-acceptance is about working through the suck and getting comfortable with yourself and then growing from it!
