Functional-analytical psychotherapy was conceived as a complement to cognitive-behavioral therapy and its offshoots, such as acceptance and commitment therapy. This method essentially embodies transference therapy from the world of CBT, which assumes that the client's relationships in life are reflected in the relationship with the therapist. Within these relationships, functional and dysfunctional behaviors emerge, which is what the FAP therapist works with.
