This episode of Unfiltered Sessions features a synth & drum duo performance called “Solarwave”, captured completely live. Everything you hear was created in the moment, no backing tracks, no overdubs, just a real-time collaboration between two musicians exploring together.
Joining me once again is Russell Holzman (aka @StarPowerDrummer), whose unconventional acoustic drum setup features multiple snare drums and a distinctive configuration.
His innovative approach includes performing complex, machine-like looped drum and bass patterns on acoustic drums, techniques that add layers of depth, texture, and spontaneity, pushing the session into fresh and unexpected directions.
For this session, I used the 1969 Moog IIIc modular system, also known as "The Plantasia Moog", along with a Minimoog Model D and a chain of OTO EFX pedals to shape and process the sounds live.
It’s all about capturing the feel of a real session: two musicians in a room, reacting to each other, and letting the track take shape naturally.
