How to Upgrade a Router // OpenWrt (How To Guide)
Welcome to Dev Odyssey Home Networking! In this episode, I go over how to upgrade your router by flashing it with OpenWrt This video has similar concepts to flashing your router with DDWRT, but the process for this router / firmware is different.

Process Outline:
Preliminary
Might be easiest to disconnect from your network after getting all the necessary firmware assets to avoid IP conflicts.
1. Check if your Netgear router is compatible -https://openwrt.org/toh/start
2. Next, download the OpenWrt firmware thats stable for your router
3. Next, check installation method for your Netgear router
1. If can install using firmware upgrade option, that is easiest
2. If not, you may have to use a tool called nmrpflash, if instructions call for it (https://github.com/jclehner/nmrpflash)
1. First, get the binary from the link, and download for your platform - https://github.com/jclehner/nmrpflash...
2. Next turn on the router, (if not on) and plug in ethernet to your computer
3. Then, run the binary (nmrpflash) with “-L” to see the interface name connected to the router. You can tell by the IP address associated with your router network. (i.e for Netgear its usually 192.168.1.*)
4. Next, shut off the router. Then perform the flash using the following command: nmrpflash -i {interface_name} -f {firmware_file_name). Then turn on the router, the command prompt / terminal will wait for the router to start, and then perform the flash. Wait until it's complete.
5. Restart the router (power button or unplug / plug in)
6. Then you will need to install the WebGUI (LuCI)
1. Use the following commands:
1. Log into router using SSH: “ssh [email protected]”
2. Initialize overlay file-system (just in case its not up), and accept all prompts (y): “jffs2reset”
3. Reboot router: “reboot”
4. Log in again using command from 1
5. Install LuCI and follow prompts: “opkg update && opkg install luci”
4. To restore Netgear router to Netgear firmware, you might be able to use the WebGUI, or repeat the nmrpflash process, except, pass in the Netgear firmware file. Reboot and log into the WebGUI
