When the election takes place on Sunday, many political observers will once again be asking: Why do people in Thuringia vote so strangely? But instead of looking for serious answers, they often resort to clichés. That's why today we're delving into the political world between Erfurt, Gotha, Gera, Jena, Eisenach, and Weimar.
We'll begin with the history that has shaped the state. We'll look at inheritance disputes in the House of Wettin, we'll explore crazy aristocratic families, and Thuringia's fall from grace. In the 1920s, the Nazi Party first came to political power. Adolf Hitler built a "model Gau" here. The Weimar Republic was thus one of the first to fail in Thuringia. Nevertheless, we can't draw simplistic conclusions along the lines of: Nazis always get elected here. Rather, there are concrete reasons why Thuringians are running into populist parties: fear of economic decline, for example, the feeling of being left behind in rural areas, or the concern of losing what they achieved after the fall of the Wall.
State politics also played a part: After the last election, Thomas Kemmerich was elected Minister-President with votes from the AfD, without having a plan for the office. Great chaos ensued, with Christine Lieberknecht, among others, being considered for interim Minister-President, but this was blocked by her own party, the CDU. Left Party incumbent Bodo Ramelow then had to lead a minority government through the coronavirus pandemic, which only worked to a limited extent. Now Mario Voigt is hoping for his chance to lead the state, while Sahra Wagenknecht and her party also have a good chance of participating in government. In the background, Björn Höcke and his AfD are already thinking about the election in five years.
